Today’s insight journey led me to the idea that it’s hard to do things with excellence when we don’t make it a point to remain focused. There have been times in the past when I have been either working on a project for work, listening to a lecture at school, or working on a personal project and I suddenly found myself zoning out as I began to think about different things. Sometimes I was able to easily reel my thoughts back in and resume focusing on the task at hand, and other times I really had to fight to maintain even the smallest semblance of focus on the task before me. And there were times when, for various reasons, I did not put up a fight at all – I just completely gave into the thoughts that came to usurp my focus and occupy my attention, something of which I am not entirely proud.
However, I was able to learn something about myself through each of those moments: if I am going to do whatever task is in front of me with excellence, I have to find a way to maintain my focus no matter how I feel, no matter how appealing the thoughts that pop into my head seem, and no matter how difficult or challenging the task is.
The truth of the matter is that there is always going to be something that will attempt to distract us and steal our focus no matter what it is that we are doing; that is just the nature of life. So, if we are going to do things with excellence, then we are going to have to figure out what we need to do in order to remain focused, and determine within ourselves that we are going to do what it takes to remain focused no matter what. In the end, we may feel as though we have experienced a little mental workout, but the end result will be the completion of tasks in a way of which we can be proud and from which we can derive a sense of accomplishment, knowing that we walked hand-in-hand with excellence every step of the way. #lovebythedrop
