Today I am thankful for the ability to change my mind. This ability has saved me from making a lot of mistakes, in effect sparing me much disappointment, sadness, and heartache, especially when I have made a decision and then realized (before the onset of any consequences) that I should have decided something else. This may seem like something rather simple, and in reality it probably is, but when you think about the number of times that your decision to put this ability to use has saved you from some disaster or a near miss of obtaining or experiencing something beneficial or desirable, you will probably find that you are thankful for this ability too.
I appreciate the opportunity to educate myself further on a subject, consider the consequences from a different perspective, and adjust my decision in a way that better suits everyone who will be affected by my decision.
In addition to experiencing a sense of freedom via the ability to change my mind, an article that I read recently touched on the idea that people who are right a lot often change their minds. The author of the article quoted Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com founder and CEO, as saying, “the smartest people are constantly revising their understanding, reconsidering a problem they thought they’d already solved. They’re open to new points of view, new information, new ideas, contradictions, and challenges to their own way of thinking.” I find this to be quite accurate and liberating. Oftentimes people tend to think that people who change their minds a lot are indecisive and flaky people who lack the ability to commit. However, in my experience that is certainly not the case. I personally know quite a few people who change their minds frequently and not only live more creative lives because of doing so, but also make decisions and give advice that tend to be spot on.
So, if you happen to be someone who takes advantage of the ability to change your mind, I encourage you to celebrate that ability and to keep an eye out for the creative happenings that will likely result from your willingness to be flexible. To those of you who do not change your mind that often, why not give it a try? You just might be in for the time of your life. #lovebythedrop
