Today’s Gem of Insight #174

Today’s insight journey led me to the idea that a little light goes a long way. Yesterday afternoon was full of thunderstorms. Literal ones. The brooding charcoal gray sky that had moments before been consumed by sunshine quickly spit out torrents of rain, almost deafening claps of thunder, and wind so ferocious that it was likely to rip houses off of their foundations.

I know, I’m putting a little extra on it. I wanted to make sure you were able to picture the chaotic scene in its fullness. Did you see it? Good!

So, there I was, safely inside my home waiting out the storm, hoping that it would hurry on by and not leave any damage in its wake. All was going well, and in short measure the storm was already showing signs of moving on from the area. Relief flooded me, especially since there hadn’t been any issues, at least from what I could tell.

And then it happened. That dreaded occurrence that we all would rather not have to deal with. The power went out.

Now, living in a state that sees its fair share of rain—some people might say more than its fair share—the power going out is not a novel thing. It happens, especially during the summer months. But this power outage caught me off guard because the storm had already died down, the wind having abated, and there wasn’t a rain drop in sight.

After notifying the power company and discovering that they expected the power to be out for the next four hours, there wasn’t much left to do but to wait it out and maybe get in a little reading. It was still bright enough outside to still be able to see well indoors, so reading seemed the thing to do.

As the hours started rolling by, the sky began to get darker, the amount of natural light diminishing until there were only remnants of the day’s light whispering their goodnight wishes as they headed for the horizon.

And then what happened? You guessed it. The power company sent a notification that instead of it only taking four hours to restore the power, they were now estimating that it would take fifteen hours. Yes, that’s right. You read that correctly. Fifteen hours!

Needless to say, that power outage threw my whole evening into a bit of disarray—figuring out storage alternatives for perishable food, locating alternative lighting resources, and more.

And, yes, the incidental things that you have to consider when the power goes out are, at times, annoying, but the thing that’s the most jarring is the absence of light. Something that we often take for granted when we have full access to it.

That’s what I want to talk about today—the idea that a little light goes a long way. You see, just like the electricity that provides power to so many things in our homes and helps us to see everything in our vicinity, we’re called to be that bright and shining light for others in this world, sharing with them the goodness and love that we ourselves have received.

We notice quickly that when we don’t share those blessings with others, the world doesn’t function correctly, people stumble around at a loss, and we don’t end up living the lives that we were intended to live.

So what can we do? We can make it a priority to keep the lights on as we continue to spread goodness and live the lives God created us to live. In doing that, we can ensure that the lights never go out. Be blessed. #lovebythedrop
