Today I am thankful for volunteer work. While going through some challenging times in life, one of the most frequent bits of advice that I received from those whom I trusted was to focus on helping others, especially those who were not in a position to do anything for me, as helping them was not only a good thing to do, but it was also a good way to help me to stop focusing on myself and the challenges I was facing.
I have always believed in helping others, and I have always been blessed by doing so. However, I can truthfully say that helping others while I was going through challenging times of my own not only blessed those whom I was helping and took my focus off of my own challenging situations, but it also reminded me of the fact that even on my roughest day I still do not have it all that bad.
I think that sometimes we become so attached to our fantasies of what our lives should be like and the things that we believe that we should have that we allow our emotions to become directly tied to our personal evaluations of whether we are succeeding or failing at obtaining those things and that life.
We do this instead of focusing on the victories that we have achieved and the ways in which we have blessed others and have been blessed ourselves. Participating in volunteer work reminds us that there is more to this life than us and what we want and think that we should have. This life is about connecting with those around us and living in harmony and fellowship with them. The blessings that we receive in this life are merely icing on the cake. #lovebythedrop
