Today I am thankful for being multilingual. As a child growing up, I had no idea how important knowing languages other than my native language would be. I just thought it was interesting, and I enjoyed the instant camaraderie that it afforded me and my friends. It was nice to be able to share private information with each other without others realizing what was said even while out in public. Of course, we handled ourselves in a respectful manner and refrained from speaking ill of people; that just was not our thing.
As I grew older, I realized that I had an affinity for learning languages, and that I had a passion for them. I was not sure what, if anything, I was going to do with that passion, but merely realizing that it existed was an eye opening experience.
Throughout the few years that I have been on this earth, knowing multiple languages has made it possible for me to meet and communicate with different people from various countries, teach languages to students, tutor students, and interpret and translate professionally.
I truly have been blessed by having had the opportunity to learn and utilize multiple languages. I encourage everyone out there to consider learning at least one other language that is different from their native language, if they have not done so already. Yes, it does require the investment of a significant amount of time and work, but the end result is that knowing that language will open up a whole new world for you. And that is an experience that is definitely worth pursuing. #lovebythedrop
